MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – A local food pantry received a big boost on New Year’s Day.
The Manhattan Hy-Vee store donated $3,058.94 to the Flint Hills Breadbasket to help feed local families, officials said.
The money was raised in November as food pantries faced unprecedented demand for food assistance because to the delay of SNAP benefit payments.
Customers at the Manhattan Hy-Vee were asked to support the effort by rounding up their grocery bill to the nearest dollar.
The Flint Hills Breadbasket received a donation of more than $3,000 on New Year’s Day from the Manhattan Hy-Vee store.(KWQC)
The $3,058.94 donation is part of the more than $466,000 that Hy-Vee stores raised across the company’s eight-state region.
The Flint Hills Breadbasket will use the donation to maintain its supply levels to serve people in the community.
“Hy-Vee is always ready to help when we can make a difference,” said Matt Kundert, store director of the Manhattan Hy-Vee store. “Keeping families fed is what Hy-Vee does best and we’re thankful for the generosity of our customers in supporting this important campaign.”
Hy-Vee stores company-wide also sold approximately 65,000 preassembled food bags, which were donated to food pantries.
The bags included pantry staples such as canned fruits and vegetables; pasta; canned proteins; and cereals.
Fighting food insecurity is a constant focus for Hy-Vee, which has donated more than $70 million through in-kind donations over the past year, officials said.
