Newly sworn in City Comptroller Mark Levine, who is now in charge of the city’s finances, told NY1 that despite some budget challenges, he believes there could be room to “be bold and innovate,” including for some of Zohran Mamdani’s campaign promises.
“We do have some challenges in the budget right now. We are being handed a deficit of probably a billion or two just this year, and probably six, seven, eight billion for the following year. So we have to work to plug that,” he said. “But when the economy grows and when we administer government smartly, I think we can extract the resources to also be bold, innovate and, yes, do things like expand free child care that are so critical to New Yorkers.”
Levine will be one of the speakers at the inauguration ceremony.
