Sanders praises Mamdani at New York City mayoral inauguration

  • January 1, 2026

NEW YORK (WCAX) – Zohran Mamdani was sworn in on Thursday as the 112th mayor of New York City. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders administered the oath of office in front of thousands of New Yorkers on Thursday afternoon.

Mamdani is the city’s first Muslim mayor and, at 34, one of its youngest ever.

He has made promises to freeze rent, eliminate bus fares and provide universal child care. Sanders said those policies are vital to help tackle affordability concerns.

“You know, all of us have heard how Zohran’s opponents have called the agenda that he campaigned on radical, communistic, oh, and absolutely unachievable. Really? That’s not what we believe,” said Sanders, I-Vermont.

The Thursday afternoon ceremony was Mamdani’s second of the day. He was officially sworn in as mayor just after midnight in one of New York City’s oldest subway stations.
