As part of the pending absorption of New Jersey City University (NJCU) by Union-based Kean University, nine degrees, 14 degree tracks, and a slew of minors and certifications offered at NJCU will be discontinued, according to an internal memo obtained by the Jersey City Times. Dozens more NJCU degree programs will be added to Kean’s academic catalog or folded into existing Kean offerings.

The two public universities’ pending merger comes three years after NJCU declared a financial emergency amid declining enrollment and ongoing fiscal mismanagement. On Dec. 22, the New Jersey Legislature passed a fast-tracked bill that would provide state approval for the merger to proceed and for NJCU to become Kean Jersey City. Gov. Phil Murphy has yet to sign the bill, and the merger must also receive final approval from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the U.S. Department of Education.
