CITY HALL STATION — IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING HIS midnight swearing-in ceremony, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the appointment of transportation professional Mike Flynn as commissioner of the city Department of Transportation.

Mamdani said the appointment underscores his administration’s commitment to “delivering an affordability agenda through safer streets, faster buses and transportation systems that work for working New Yorkers.”

Flynn has decades of transportation experience. Most recently, he led the New York office of TYLin City Solutions (formerly Sam Schwartz Engineering) overseeing major transportation, development and infrastructure projects. Previously, he spent almost ten years at NYCDOT, where he was director of Capital Planning and Project Initiation, and earlier worked on pedestrian and bicycle programs.

The Regional Plan Association applauded the announcement, as did former NYCDOT commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, who said, “Mike knows the agency, the city and its streets from the inside out.”

Flynn received his Masters of Science in city and regional planning from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and also spent eight years as a visiting professor in Pratt’s Programs for Sustainable Planning and Development. He replaces NYCDOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, a former Manhattan City Council member appointed by former Mayor Eric Adams.
