GRAND ARMY PLAZA/PROSPECT HEIGHTS — MAYOR ZOHRAN MAMDANI ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY HIS ADMINISTRATION’S NEW OFFICE OF MASS ENGAGEMENT. Speaking from Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza, he announced and then signed Executive Orders establishing the office and appointing two new commissioners, with CBS News and other media outlets covering the 2:20 p.m. press conference.
During his opening remarks, Mamdani said the Office of Mass Engagement “will be a fundamental part of city government dedicated to rebuilding our social infrastructure at scale…The Office of Mass Engagement will organize participation across this city, proactively reach those that have been excluded, and ensure that public feedback is embedded directly into how we design policies, deliver services and make decisions.”
The new office will oversee existing city units, among them the Public Engagement Unit, the Mayor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships, NYC Service and the Civic Engagement Commission. Mamdani has tapped one of his key campaign organizers, Brooklynite Tascha Van Auken, as that office’s first commissioner.
Mamdani also has revitalized the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary, tapping as its chair renowned civil rights and election attorney Ali Najmi as Chair, according to a release on the mayor’s website.
