NEW YORK (PIX11) — 2026 is already off to a frigid start!
New York City Emergency Management has issued a Cold Weather Alert, as wind chills on Friday reached as low as 14 degrees in the morning.
The temperature has increased slightly into the afternoon, but wind chills are expected to stay in the low 20s.
The New York City Department of Homeless Services will issue a Code Blue as the overnight wind chill is expected to drop to near 15 degrees. Saturday highs should hover around freezing.
New Yorkers are encouraged to wear warm layers, a hat, gloves, and proper footwear.
City outreach teams will visit individuals living on the streets and in the subway system, encouraging them to visit a Department of Homeless Services shelter or a drop-in center.

Anyone in need of shelter can stay at a shelter or drop-in center without going through the normal intake process.
If you see a homeless person out in the cold or someone in need of shelter, you can call 311, and an outreach team will be sent to the location.
