KINGSTON, Ont. – The McGill Martlets capped their OUA women’s field hockey season with a long-awaited moment of joy, edging Queen’s 1-0 on Sunday to record their first regular-season victory in six years.
Midfielder Avery Berry, a 19-year-old cognitive science sophomore from Vancouver, B.C., came off the bench to score the decisive goal with just under seven minutes remaining, breaking a 0-42-1 winless streak in regular season play that stretched back to a 3-1 triumph at Queen’s on Oct. 12, 2019.
Goaltender Gabriella Fourkas, a 19-year-old history sophomore from Sunnyvale, Calif., made four saves for her first career shutout as McGill (1-9-0) ended a difficult campaign on a high note.
Queen’s (1-9-0) outshot McGill 7-2, including a 4-2 edge in shots on target, and held a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners. But the Martlets capitalized on one of their few late chances when Berry converted off a penalty-corner sequence in the 53rd minute.
The Gaels’ goalkeeper S. Downes made one save, while Fourkas turned aside three third-quarter shots and another in the closing minutes to preserve the shutout.
Green cards were issued to Queen’s forward S. Buckland in the 44th minute and McGill midfielder Sienna Fabbro a minute later.
It was a day of firsts as McGill defender Clara Smyrski of Lebanon, N.H., had scored the team’s first goal of the season just a few hours earlier in the opening game of the doubleheader, a 2-1 loss to the Gaels.
