Black Monday has started a day early.

The Atlanta Falcons have started their offseason changes immediately, firing head coach Raheem Morris after going 8-9, the team said Sunday. On top of the head coach, Atlanta also moved on from general manager Terry Fontenot.

“The decision to move away from people who represent the organization so well and have a shared commitment to the values that are important to the organization is not an easy one, but the results on the field have not met our expectations or those of our fans and leadership,” owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. “I wish Raheem and Terry the absolute best in their future pursuits.”

ZRG Partners will assist on the head coach search and Sportsology Group will assist on the general manager role search, the team said. There is no timetable, though both searches will occur concurrently.

Under Morris, the Falcons went 8-9 in both seasons he was in charge despite a talented roster and a weak NFC South division. Under Fontenot, that record expanded to 36-48 with no winning seasons or a single playoff appearance.

Atlanta ended the season on a four-game winning streak and tied the division-leading record, as the 8-9 Carolina Panthers secured the NFC South for a playoff spot.

Had the Falcons not lost to the New York Jets just a few weeks earlier, it would’ve been Atlanta making a playoff appearance over their divisional rivals.

It’s also unclear who will be the QB1 moving forward, as Michael Penix Jr. suffered another season-ending injury and hasn’t impressed enough in his starts.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter added that offensive stars Drake London and Bijan Robinson openly called for Morris to stay after the win over the New Orleans Saints.

Though that won’t be the case, Atlanta will still be an attractive spot due to its skill players on both sides of the ball and promising position within the division. The main short-term downside is no first-round pick this year, as it is going to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Tennessee Titans and New York Giants were the two teams that made head coach firing mid-season, while the Miami Dolphins also have a general manager vacancy.
