1. Zohran Mamdani addresses New Yorkers as NYC’s mayor at inauguration ceremony
Newly sworn in Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed New Yorkers in front of City Hall Thursday afternoon in a 24-minute inauguration address.
“My fellow New Yorkers, today begins a new era. I stand before you, moved by the privilege of taking this sacred oath,” he said. “But I do not stand alone. I stand beside you.”
Mamdani is the first Muslim and first person of South Asian descent to serve in the position of mayor of New York City. At 34 years old, he is also the five boroughs’ youngest mayor in the past 100 years.
Here’s what also happened on Inauguration Day:
Former Mayor Bill de Blasio told NY1 that he thinks Mamdani has a “beautiful vision” for New York City.
Just after midnight Thursday, New York state Attorney General Letitia James swore in Mamdani at a historic subway station in Manhattan, which she told NY1 it represents “the grand ideas, the great ideas of the past.”
Mahmoud Khalil, the pro-Palestinian activist who led protests at Columbia University and was jailed by the Trump administration, told NY1 his relationship with Mamdani started after the mayor was “the first to call for my release.”
Newly sworn in City Comptroller Mark Levine, who is now in charge of the city’s finances, told NY1 that despite some budget challenges, he believes there could be room to “be bold and innovate,” including for some of Mamdani’s campaign promises.
In case you missed it, here’s a recap on Mamdani’s road to City Hall.

On his first day as mayor, Zohran Mamdani signed a series of executive orders aimed at tackling New York City’s housing crisis, calling them a starting point for broader change.
The orders revamp the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants and create two new task forces to speed up housing construction and identify city-owned sites for development.
