CITY HALL AND GREENPOINT — THE CITY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WILL COMPLETE THE DELAYED REDESIGN OF MCGUINNESS BOULEVARD, a particularly hazardous road connecting Brooklyn and Queens, the agency’s Commissioner Mike Flynn and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Saturday, Jan. 3, during a press conference at Father Studzinski Square.
McGuinness Boulevard is a vital cycling connection between Brooklyn and Queens, serving more than 4,000 daily riders during the summer months. But it is also dangerous for bikers, pedestrians, and drivers alike. Under Mayor Mamdani, NYC DOT will implement its original plan to install parking-protected bike lanes along the boulevard’s entire corridor. The plan also involves extending the existing parking-protected lanes that run between Meeker and Calyer northbound up to the Pulaski Bridge. Upon completion, each direction of McGuinness will have one travel lane, one parking-protected bike lane and one vehicular parking and loading lane.
There is some controversy to the redesign project, as former Mayor Eric Adams had suddenly weakened it in 2023. Then, “Adams’ top aide Ingrid Lewis-Martin was indicted by the Brooklyn District Attorney for allegedly accepting bribes to stop this safety project,” according to a press release from advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, which supports the project’s latest green-light.
