Onondaga County Legislator Rich McCarron announced Monday he will run for a state Senate seat in Central New York.
McCarron will formally announce Monday evening in Auburn that he will run as a Republican for New York’s 48th state Senate District, currently represented by Democrat Rachel May.
Born in Brooklyn, McCarron has been in Central New York for more than three decades, serving in the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office for more than 20 years, with roles as a major crimes detective, supervisor of the Sheriff’s Community Relations Unit and others.
He was then appointed to the Onondaga County Legislature’s 11th District in 2023 by County Executive Ryan McMahon. He won elections to that seat in his own right in 2023 and 2025.
May has been in the state Senate since 2019. The 48th District includes the city of Syracuse, southern and western parts of Onondaga County and all of Cayuga County.
