York College’s business programs have received a new distinction recognizing excellence, the Jamaica school announced on Dec. 30.

Fenio Annasingh-Jamieson, the interim dean of the School of Business & Information Systems, said York was granted initial accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs for its Department of Business and Economics.

The recognition was conferred by the council’s baccalaureate and graduate degree board of commissioners.

“The ACBSP designation reflects a multi-year effort focused on teaching excellence, student learning outcomes and continuous improvement,” said Annasingh-Jamieson via email. “This milestone positions York College’s business programs among accredited business schools nationally and underscores the college’s commitment to academic quality and access.”

York’s undergraduate business programs were established as a core part of the college’s academic offerings in 2009, said Annasingh-Jamieson. Its graduate business program, the Master of Science in Aviation Management, was launched in fall 2019.

An accreditation by ACBSP affirms that the business programs meet global standards of quality and are focused on preparing students for leadership in a dynamic business environment.

“This achievement reflects the outstanding work, dedication and collaboration of everyone involved,” said Annansingh-Jamieson in a statement. “This is truly wonderful news …”

Claudia Schrader, York’s president, was proud about the distinction.

“This accreditation shows just how hard everyone at York College works to help our students succeed,” Schrader said in a statement. “Our faculty and staff put so much effort into making our Department of Business and Economics programs the best they can be, and this recognition proves it. “We’re excited to give our students an education that truly prepares them to take on any challenge in today’s fast-moving business world.”
