STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Freshkills Park Alliance has scheduled three public programs for January as the 2,200-acre site continues its transformation from former landfill to parkland.

The month kicked off Jan. 4 with a photography tour called “Capturing Change.”

At the park’s photography tours, photographers of all skill levels can document the park’s ongoing transformation during a guided tour of areas typically closed to the public. Participants brought their own equipment, including digital cameras, film cameras or phones.

Upcoming events in 2026

On Jan. 18 at 11 a.m., the alliance will host a Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop at the Greenbelt Nature Center. The workshop introduces participants to environmental ethics through indoor and outdoor activities focused on responsible recreation practices. Individuals can register for the workshop here.

The month concludes with a volunteer stewardship project Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. at William T. Davis Refuge. Volunteers will help build puncheon, or walkways, on existing trails to improve accessibility throughout the park. Individuals can register for the stewardship project here.

Park fundraiser

In addition to the public events at the park, the Freshkills Park Alliance is also hosting a fundraiser event on Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Road House. The event celebrates the 55th birthday of park administrator Mark Murphy and will feature food, drinks, and socializing. Individuals who want to attend can purchase a ticket here.

The Freshkills Park Alliance supports the development of the park, promotes on-site research and education about ecological restoration, and expands tours, arts, recreation, and events at the site.
