Bring Christmas trees to NYC Parks’ Mulchfest

CITYWIDE — NYC PARKS’ ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING TRADITION continues this weekend with Mulchfest at several locations around the city, including Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

During Chipping Weekend, Saturday, Jan. 10, and Sunday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents can bring their trees to one of several locations where Parks Department crews will chip the tree and give participants their very own bag of mulch to use in backyards or to make a winter bed for a street tree. Trees must be natural, with all ornaments and lights already removed. The Brooklyn locations are Prospect Park-Lincoln Road & Ocean Avenue, Coffey Park in Red Hook, Sunset Park and Washington Hall Park in northern Clinton Hill on the opposite side of the BQE from the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

“Mulchfest is one of New York City’s favorite sustainability traditions, and last year New Yorkers showed up in a big way, by chipping over 52,000 trees! I am hoping that together as a city we can do even better this year,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Iris-Rodriguez Rosa, who pointed out that mulching supports the city parks year-round and enables communities to practice environmental responsibility together.
