USA, New York, Brooklyn: Con Edison has begun construction of its $1.3 B Gateway substation in Canarsie, a large-scale energy infrastructure project designed to deliver reliable electricity to more than 52,000 customers in Central and East Brooklyn.

The new facility, located on East 91st Street, will process high-voltage electricity and includes the installation of 45 km (28 mi) of underground cables to support growing demand in one of New York City’s fastest-developing areas.

Con Edison officials said electricity needs in Brooklyn are expected to increase by 16 % over the next decade, driven by population growth, new businesses, and electrification efforts across the city.

“This station is here to help protect against massive outages and ensure the borough’s energy resilience,” said John Carucci, Con Edison’s Construction Manager for the project.

Local community leaders have also highlighted the substation’s role in improving climate resiliency and equity. “East Brooklyn faces the realities of extreme heat and limited green coverage,” said Allyson Martinez, Executive Director of Brooklyn Level Up. “Projects like this can help bring lasting stability to the community.”

The Gateway substation is scheduled for completion in 2028, forming part of Con Edison’s broader strategy to modernise New York City’s grid and deliver power more reliably, efficiently, and affordably.
