Mamdani swears in Lillian Bonsignore as FDNY Comissioner

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — MAYOR ZOHRAN MAMDANI on Tuesday swore in Lillian Bonsignore as commissioner of the Fire Department of New York at the FDNY Department Headquarters. 

A longtime Bronx-based EMS leader, Bonsignore joined the department in 1991, responded to the Sept. 11 attacks, and became the first woman to reach a four-star EMS rank in FDNY history. In 2019, Bonsignore was appointed chief of EMS, where she oversaw more than 4,000 EMTs and paramedics and led emergency medical operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the department’s most demanding periods. She retired in 2022 and has since worked as a public speaker and EMS consultant.

“I am honored to return to the Fire Department as its Commissioner. I have spent my life loving the FDNY, and it is an unparalleled honor to serve in this manner,” said Fire Commissioner Bonsignore.
