More than 154,000 New York City public school students were homeless at some point during the last school year — the highest number ever recorded and equal to one in seven students.
Advocates warn that housing instability creates steep barriers to learning, with 67% of shelter residents chronically absent. Nearly 40% of families are placed in shelters outside their child’s borough, complicating commutes and stability.
