STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Speeding has been the most common type of traffic ticket issued on Staten Island this year, followed closely by disobeying traffic control devices, with the two offenses accounting for roughly one-third of all moving violation summonses issued through the first nine months of the year.

There have been 18,044 moving violations summonses issued on Staten Island from the beginning of January through the end of September, according to NYPD traffic data.

The more than 18,000 moving violations include 4,611 in the 120th Precinct, 4,770 in the 121st Precinct, 5,302 in the 122nd Precinct and 3,361 in the 123rd Precinct.

The NYPD advises that all data is preliminary and subject to change.

There were 3,367 speeding tickets written during the first nine months, including 564 in the 120 Precinct, 1,027 in the the 121st Precinct, 1,234 in the 122 Precinct and 542 in the 123 Precinct.

The 3,367 speeding tickets represent 18.7% of all moving violations summonses issued from January through September.

A recent data analysis by the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com found speeding to be among the most common contributing factors to injury-causing crashes throughout the borough.

There were 2,749 tickets issued for disobeying a traffic control device, a broad offense that includes running red lights, ignoring stop signs or disobeying any signs, devices or pavement markings meant to regulate traffic. There were 637 in the 120th Precinct, 602 in the 121st Precinct, 934 in the 122nd Precinct and 576 in the 123rd Precinct.

The 2,749 tickets for disobeying a traffic control device represent 15.2% of all moving violations summonses, meaning the two offenses combined account for roughly one-third of all traffic tickets issued so far this year.

Speeding, with 3,367 tickets, and disobeying a traffic control device, with 2,749 tickets, were the first and third most common tickets issued on Staten Island, respectively.

The second most common ticket issued was for tinted vehicle windows, with 3,175 such violations, including 879 in the 120th Precinct, 1,111 in the 121st Precinct, 598 in the 122nd Precinct and 587 in the 123rd Precinct.
