Thousands of New Yorkers gathered on the night of Wednesday, January 7, to protest in solidarity with Minneapolis after the fatal shooting of 37-year-old woman by an agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Footage captured by Kevin Whelan shows a huge crowd of protestors gathered at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan. A speaker is heard talking to the group.

“But we have to be clear that Renee’s killers weren’t just the ones wearing ICE uniforms today. Renee’s murder is state-sanctioned murder!” the speaker said.

Demonstrators can also be heard jeering US President Donald Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

In a statement posted to social media, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said: “ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism. An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers. The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the DHS version of events “bulls***t” and said the woman was shot by an ICE agent “recklessly using power.” Frey demanded that ICE leave Minneapolis immediately. Credit: Kevin Whelan via Storyful
