STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island residents should be cautious of patchy black ice during the Friday morning commute as temperatures hover around or just below freezing.

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement warning of hazardous road conditions through the morning hours.

The black ice threat will diminish by late morning as temperatures climb into the lower to mid-50s under increasing clouds. According to the National Weather Service, rain will develop Friday late afternoon, continuing into the evening before tapering off late Friday night.

A more significant rain event will arrive Saturday afternoon and continue into Saturday night, potentially becoming moderate to heavy at times. Rainfall totals are expected to reach between 0.5 to 1.5 inches across Staten Island and the New York City area. While some localized heavy downpours are possible Saturday evening, flooding concerns remain minimal.

Sunday will bring windy conditions to Staten Island following a cold frontal passage in the afternoon. Wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph are expected late Sunday into Sunday night, with some gusts potentially exceeding 40 mph in the New York City metro area.

Temperatures will return closer to normal for January from Sunday night through Monday night, with lows in the 20s to lower 30s and highs near 40 degrees. The weather pattern will warm again Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the 40s and lows mostly in the 30s.

The next chance for precipitation arrives Wednesday night into Thursday, when the National Weather Service indicates a cold front may bring rain or snow showers to the region.
