Details are emerging regarding the shocking death of former Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, with the East Bay Times reporting his passing came while in police custody.

Martin passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 36 after police were responding to a 4:15 a.m. ET home break-in in Oakland, Calif. allegedly involving Martin.

Martin was reportedly already having a “medical emergency” and then a “brief struggle” ensued.

The former Buccaneers and Raiders star allegedly resisted arrest when police attempted to detain him, became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital, where he later died, according to Oakland’s local Fox affiliate.

Police did not specifiy why they detained Martin and it was unclear what the “medical emergency” was.

After he became unresponsive, paramedics arrived and he was taken to a hospital.

“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said in a statement. ”Cause of death is currently unconfirmed.”

Martin’s cause of death is still under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.

The officers involved in the incident were put on administrative leave, as is protocol.

Martin played six of his seven seasons in Tampa before finishing his career with the Raiders, who played in his hometown of Oakland at the time.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a statement. “From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”
