Police are investigating after a newborn baby girl was left abandoned Monday morning at a subway station in Midtown Manhattan, authorities said.

Officers from the NYPD’s Midtown South Precinct responded to a 911 call shortly before 9:30 a.m. reporting an infant at the 34th Street-Penn Station stop below 7th Avenue, police said.

Officials said the infant was found awake and responsive, wrapped in a blanket at the base of a staircase that leads to the 1/2/3 train platform.

Emergency responders took the newborn to a nearby hospital for evaluation, where her condition was described as stable. Fox 5 reported that the baby was discovered with her umbilical cord still attached.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the discovery remain under investigation, and they are reviewing the station’s security footage to determine who left the infant unattended.

Under New York State’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act, parents may surrender an infant up to 30 days old without facing criminal charges, provided the child is left safely at a designated location such as a hospital, police precinct or fire station.
