QUEENS, N.Y. — Sophomore Tyler Schoenberg scored a career-high 16 points and St. Peter’s turned in a strong second half to notch its first CHSAA AA victory of the season with a 57-47 decision over host Archbishop Molloy on Sunday.

The Eagles, who also received big games from Aaron Vazquez (13 points), Nico Parlanti (nine points) and Ryan Christie (three treys), won two straight for the first time this season following Friday’s 44-43 nail-biting victory over Monsignor Farrell.

St. Peter’s improved to 4-7 overall, including 1-4 in league play.

Myles Miller (13 points) and Christian Paige (nine points, three treys) paced the Stanners (6-7 overall, 2-6 CHSAA). The Eagles held leading scorer Kelly Griffin Jr. (18.8 ppg.) to just seven points.

“I thought we did a great job of competing at both ends of the floor (Sunday)‚’’ said SP head coach Ryan Woods. ”We were able to rebound and take advantage of our size.

“(6-foot-5 Schoenberg and 6-4 Vazquez) were both excellent and gave us a huge lift,’’ Woods added. ”Our defense has been solid and the boys are playing with great effort and focus.’’

Thanks in part to Paige’s three-point shooting, the Stanners owned a 30-28 lead at intermission.

But the Eagles dug in defensively after halftime as they limited Molloy to 17 points over the last two quarters, including just four field goals. In the meantime, Christie nailed his last two treys and Schoenberg scored four points as the Eagles carried a 43-39 lead into the final eight minutes.

Parlanti scored seven fourth-quarter points — including his lone three — and Ryan Freeman, Schoenberg and Vazquez each added key buckets as SP pulled away for the double-digit win.

“In the second half, we got stops when we needed them,’’ praised Woods. ”It’s hard to win on the road in this league and it was really a great effort by the boys across the board.”

The Eagles will have little time to rest on their laurels. They host Iona Prep Tuesday and St. Joseph by-the-Sea Thursday (both 7 p.m.). The New Brighton school then heads to Massachusetts for two games in the Panini Hoophall Invitational next weekend.
