Retail Apocalypse Continues Across New York, Many Closures

The so-called retail apocalypse is continuing in 2026. Over 30 retail stores across New York are closing.

In early 2025, Hudson Valley Post reported that GameStop was closing around 1,000 stores nationwide, including about 30 in New York.

Several more stores closed in the Empire State last year. While announcing more closures, the company also said it will invest “heavily” in Bitcoin.

Results of that investment haven’t been made public, but the retail giant confirmed plans to close a “significant number of additional stores” in January 2026.

Company officials said the closing of 470 stores is part of a nationwide “optimization review.”

More closures are expected, officials warn. The closures are attributed to declining sales and a shift to online gaming.
