ALBANY, N.Y. — New Yorkers hoping for an organ transplant have one less obstacle standing in their way.

New legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday, the HEART Act, allows patients to register at multiple transplant centers at the same time — something that used to be prohibited. The act repeals the state’s ban on multi-listing, something Gov. Hochul says will decrease death rates for those hoping for a transplant.

According to the New York State Assembly, around 450 New Yorkers died waiting for a transplant in 2021, and New York has the third highest need for donors in the U.S.
