New York State School Holidays In 2026
The first school holiday of 2026 is officially here, as kids across the state will have Monday off to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. According to the US Department of Personnel Management,
The Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. is listed as one of 11 federal U.S. holidays. That means all public schools across the country, including here in New York State.
MLK’s birthday is one of five school holidays that students will have off before summer break in 2026. The other holidays include Presidents’ Day on February 16th, Lunar New Year on February 17th, Memorial Day on May 25th, and Juneteenth on June 19th.
It was just a couple of years ago that Juneteenth and the Lunar New Year were added to school holidays in New York State. You should also double-check with your local school district for any other conference or teacher workday where your child might also have the day off.

Many schools across the state will close at the end of June for the start of summer.
New York State School Testing Dates
While kids will be off for a couple of days before summer vacation, a lot of them will be taking tests before then. Here is a look at New York State’s testing schedule for the Spring of 2026.
Grades 3–8 ELA & Math: April 6 – May 15, 2026
Grades 5 & 8 Science: April 6 – May 15, 2026
June Regents: June 9 & 10; June 17-25, 2026
