1. 2 former Marcy correction officers, medical examiner, take stand in Michael Fisher trial
The prosecution called former correction officer Glenn Trombly to the stand. A sergeant, Trombly was working the night of Dec. 9, 2024, when Robert Brooks transferred to Marcy and was beaten by prison guards. The defense subpoenaed Robert Kessler.Â
The former mayor of Dannemora is facing criminal charges for allegedly falsifying time sheets to allow state correction officers to claim they worked for the village and obtain additional state retirement benefits, state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said Wednesday.
3. First responders working around I-81 construction
As construction ramps up, first responders say detours and lane restrictions can mean longer trips, especially near the city and hospitals. One local ambulance service says the impacts are already showing up on the road.
4. Buttenschon won’t run for reelection to Assembly
Utica Common Councilman Joe Betar will run for a state Assembly seat being vacated by Democrat Marianne Buttenschon.
5. New York AG settles with Jewish group she accused of intimidating pro-Palestinian activists
The group, Betar US, gained attention last year after claiming it had compiled the names of campus protesters against the war in Gaza and submitted them to Trump administration officials, urging deportation. It boasted of using facial recognition software to identify masked activists.
6. Minnesota protesters, agents square off while prosecutors quit after Renee Good’s death
Federal officers dropped tear gas and sprayed eye irritant at activists Tuesday during another day of confrontations in Minneapolis, while students miles away walked out of a suburban school to protest the Trump administration’s bold immigration sweeps.
