Another candidate is joining Connecticut’s gubernatorial race. Betsy McCaughey announced her campaign Wednesday night at the Stamford Republican Town Committee.
McCaughey grew up in Milford and Westport and has a background as a news anchor and a columnist. She also served as lieutenant governor from 1995 to 1998 with then-New York Gov. George Pataki (R). McCaughey also founded Reduce Infection Deaths (RID), a nonprofit dedicated to stopping infections in hospitals.
In her announcement on Wednesday, McCaughey said she will pledge to lower electric rates and ban offshore wind power. She said that cutting taxes and lowering electric rates are the key to “restoring growth” in the state.
McCaughey enters the Republican race alongside former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart and State Sen. Ryan Fazio (R-36).
Incumbent Gov. Ned Lamont (D) is running for his third term and is seeing a Democratic challenge in State Rep. Joshua Elliott (D-88).
The primary election is Aug. 11, and the general election is Nov. 3.
