BOROUGHWIDE — SEVERAL CITY OUTPOSTS OF fitness chain PureGym, including four in Brooklyn, are being investigated for violations of the city’s fire code stemming from the gym’s unique door pod entry system, after a video of a woman appearing to get stuck in one of the pods went viral online, reports News 12. 

PureGym’s entryways feature twin sets of round glass doors that members need to scan through. The FDNY said that the stylized doors were not included in the plans the gym chain submitted to the city for approval, and that exits could potentially be blocked in case of a fire or other emergency. The Department of Buildings is set to conduct additional safety inspections.

A spokesperson for the gym told News 12 that the chain has never had trouble related to its door pods in its 17 years of operation, that standard, accessible doors are also an option for customers, and that the pod depicted in the video had not been fully operational at the time of filming. The chain also noted that the pods have emergency exit buttons.
