LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. —

New York state troopers and local first responders in Herkimer County pulled off a daring rescue earlier this month after a local resident’s dog fell into an icy canal.

State police were called to Industrial Park in Little Falls on the morning of Jan. 10 after they received a request for help from the Little Falls police and fire departments.

Once on scene, troopers learned that a woman had been walking her Labrador mix when the dog approached the water and fell in. The woman tried to rescue the dog, but in doing so she also fell into the canal.

While the local fire and police departments were able to get the woman safely out of the water, the dog was still trapped and beginning to drown.

In a rescue caught on his body camera, Trooper Michael Szarek tried to use a water rescue rope to drag the dog out of the water. When that didn’t work, Szarek and another officer went into the water and pulled the dog to safety.

No one was seriously injured during the rescue.
