A 24-year-old woman was killed when a head-on collision occurred between a school bus and a car on Thursday morning in suburban Manhattan, authorities said.
The crash happened at 8:17 a.m. CT near the intersection of Manhattan Monee and Kankakee Roads, the Manhattan Fire Protection District said in a release. According to the release, the bus was transporting Manhattan School District students. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead, Illinois State Police said.
The Will County Coroner’s Office identified her as Makenna M. Maurisak, 24, of Manhattan. An autopsy was set to take place on Friday to determine the manner and cause of death.
The bus was carrying 10 students and one driver, officials said. The students and driver were evaluated at the scene and transported to nearby hospitals “due to the severity of the accident,” the fire district added.
Video captured by NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter showed the school bus being towed away from the scene.
The crash remained under investigation by Illinois State Police as of Friday evening.
