Homeowners in the Castle Hill section of The Bronx spent the day shoveling heavy, slushy snow and spreading salt along sidewalks as snow continued to fall.

Residents say staying ahead of icy conditions is critical to keeping people safe. Saqeb Ahmed said a past fall involving his father made him more cautious about clearing snow and ice promptly.

Others in the neighborhood say keeping sidewalks clear is important not only for family members, but for anyone walking by. Some residents also expressed concern about the responsibility that comes with snow removal, saying it can feel overwhelming.

Doctors advise those shoveling snow to take precautions, recommending pushing snow instead of lifting it, bending at the knees and hips rather than the waist and shoveling early and often to avoid injury.
