STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Department of Transportation recently installed speed humps on Forest Hill Road in New Springville in an ongoing effort to slow down drivers.

The stretch of Forest Hill Road, which already featured infrastructure designed to slow traffic, now has three speed humps — two near Richmond Hill Road and one near Platinum Avenue.

And some locals said the speed humps were a welcome addition to the very long, wide road that connects Richmond Avenue with Snake Hill, Travis Avenue and Rockland Avenue.

“This is a great thing. As soon as we saw it the other day, we said it’s the best thing they ever did,” said Sue C., a resident of New Springville who asked that her last name not be published.

“They used to speed down here no matter what, even with the camera, so it’s definitely a good thing. The poor people who live here [on Forest Hill Road] couldn’t come in and out of their driveway,” she continued, adding that traffic on the road seems less intense since the speed humps were installed.

Before the speed humps, the road featured electronic speed displays, which designed to remind drivers of the 30 MPH speed limit.

The section of Forest Hill Road also features a speed camera located near Stone Lane, which to date has issued 1,950 tickets in 2025.

“Lowering vehicle speed limits by even a few miles per hour could be the difference between life or death in a traffic crash. This new speed hump will help enhance safety on corridor with heavy speeding,” said a DOT spokesperson when asked about the changes in the area.
