ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – This week in 1997, shoppers in New York were enticed into stores with the promise of no sales tax on clothing purchases.
The goal was to give retailers a boost and compete with New Jersey, which had no tax on clothes.
The success of the event in New York led many other states to launch their own sales tax holidays.
New York and Vermont have both since eliminated sales taxes on most clothing items.
New Hampshire, of course, does not have any kind of sales tax.
