STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Junior Ryan Hanley recorded a double-double and scored the go-ahead free throws with just 14 seconds left as host Monsignor Farrell recorded a 45-42 CHSAA A Division victory over first-place St. John Prep Monday in Oakwood.

The 6-foot-6 Hanley finished tied for the game-high with 15 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lions, who improved to 9-7 overall (7-5 CHSAA). JJ Yates (three treys) added 13 points while Matt Scalisi and Mike Abreu teamed for another 15 markers for Farrell.

The Lions nearly upset the first-place Red Storm (15-2 overall) during the first game out of the break a few weeks back. But the Queens school, which received offensive contributions from Daquan Bryant (15 points) and Richard Fernandez (10 points) on Monday, stormed back to squeeze out a 60-57 win.

Farrell, however, got the last laugh this time around. The Lions trailed late, but did everything right in the waning minutes to hand SJP its first league loss (10-1).

“We knew if we did things right we could knock them off and we did enough today to do it,’’ said Farrell head coach Danny Fisher, whose team buried each of its six free-throw attempts. ”I’m proud of everyone in the locker room for that. However, we know we need to continue to get better if we want to accomplish our goals of winning a championship and our guys are up for the challenge.’’

St. John’s carried a 34-33 lead into the fourth quarter and held a lead several times down the stretch, but each time the Lions stormed back.

The lefty-shooting Yates tied the score at 38-38 with a trey out of a time out. Then, with the Lions trailing 42-38, the three-year varsity player buried another triple off a baseline out-of-bounds play to get Farrell within a point with 2:22 left.

“JJ has the green light and his teammates do a great job finding him,’’ praised Fisher.

Farrell still trailed by a single point with time winding down when Hanley got fouled driving to the rim with just 14 ticks left. The big man sank both free throws to give the Lions a 43-42 lead.

“Ryan is working hard on becoming a multi-level scorer and you could see it this past week,’’ said Fisher of Hanley. ”He is scoring in the post, facing up and attacking and even knocking down threes.

“When he plays within himself, he is one of the best bigs in the league.’’

SJP looked to regain the lead in the waning seconds, but missed a shot and Abreu (13 rebounds, six offensive) grabbed the rebound and drew a foul. The junior calmly sank both freebies to up Farrell’s lead to three.

“I’m proud of how we executed in the big spots today,’’ said Fisher. ”And that was on both sides of the ball — it shows our growth and maturity.’’

Xavier 61, Moore 44

MANHATTAN — The Mavericks found themselves behind the eight-ball early and never recovered as they dropped the CHSAA A decision to the host Knights on Monday.

Senior guard Nick DeGrado finished with 15 points while Eenej Vinson and Matt Mieles combined for another 15 markers for Moore, which dropped to 3-10 overall (2-8 CHSAA).

Peter Franchock and Aleksandar Kovacevic finished with 18 and 16 points, respectively, for Xavier (8-7 overall, 5-7 league). Franchock, who was 3 for 3 from the line, had a three-pointer and one conventional three-point play..

The Knights led 14-8 after one period. Franchock tallied seven points and Kovacevic added six in the second quarter as the Manhattan school built a 30-20 advantage at intermission and never looked back.

Pace 56, MSIT 42

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Seagulls owned a one-point lead at halftime, but the Setters turned in a big second half to capture the MLK Classic contest at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.

Ray Guerriero led the way for MSIT with 15 points. Nizayah Jordan and Terence Legrand added eight points apiece for the Gulls, who dropped to 12-8 overall.

Madjou Bah scored a game-high 18 points and Romario Medwinter added 13 for Pace, which is a PSAL 2A squad.

Thanks to Guerriero’s nine first-half points, MSIT was able to take a 19-18 advantage into the locker room.

But Medwinter scored each of his 13 points — including three treys — after halftime and Bah added 11 markers as the Manhattan school outscored the Seagulls 38-23 in the second half to take home the victory.
