A popular video game retailer is closing nearly 500 stores to kick off 2026.
GameStop has closed or will close more than 475 locations across the U.S. this month, according to WKYC and the company’s website. The updated list of store closings includes at least 31 GameStop locations in New York state.
The most recent closures include two in Central New York at the Marshalls Plaza on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt and at Meadows Square in Ithaca, according to GameStop’s website. Only five locations remain open within 50 miles of Syracuse, including shops in Auburn, Cicero, New Hartford, Rome, and at Syracuse’s Destiny USA mall.
Others that recently shuttered include Upstate New York shops in Amsterdam, Buffalo, Depew, Evans Mills, Herkimer, Hudson, Johnstown, Middletown, Monticello, Plattsburgh, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Victor, and Webster. That’s on top of more than 20 stores in Upstate NY that closed in 2025.
GameStop said in its third-quarter earnings report on Dec. 9 that it closed 590 stores in the U.S. during the previous year as part of a “store portfolio optimization review.” An SEC filing in December said the company planned to close a “significant number of additional stores” during the fiscal year, which ends on Jan. 31, 2026.
GameStop had about 2,325 U.S. locations and 900 stores in other countries at the beginning of last year. The latest closures will bring its total business to less than half of its peak footprint with 6,000 worldwide locations a decade ago.
As of Sunday, January 11th, the list of planned closures is at 435 stores across 42 states. As of February 2025, the company was operating 2,325 stores in the US, so that represents a significant reduction in its retail presence. And this comes as the company is largely winding down its international operations, having already left Canada, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Switzerland, and Italy, with plans to exit France within the next 12 months.
GameStop is best known for selling both new and used video games, controllers, consoles and other electronics items. The company has struggled to compete with increased competition from online retailers and streaming gaming options, despite a recent effort converting some locations into “retro” stores last year to attract fans of older Nintendo, PlayStation, Sega Genesis and Xbox products.
According to The Verge, another reason for the cuts could be a huge financial incentive for GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen, who will reportedly earn $35 billion in stock options if the company hits a $100 billion market cap. One way to hit that potential payday would be to trim costs by closing stores.
