After just two weeks living in Los Angeles after moving from New York City, I have noticed that I am already gravitating towards different elements in my wardrobe than usual. I’ve said goodbye to my days constantly living in sky-high heels and thick, heavy coats—hello to kitten heels and light layers! I find that the Art Deco architecture and Hollywood history have made me rethink my closet.

What are my forever pieces? How can I play without my go-to number of layers and New York glam, yet still feel cool and sophisticated? Ahead, I broke down the parts of my New York era-style that have followed me west, plus the swaps I’m making—like a trendy pair of sneakers—now that the weather is a little easier to dress for.

Outfits That Center Around a Lightweight Jacket

The two pieces I have found myself gravitating toward the most over these two weeks have been one, my trusty suede jacket—it’s perfect for the 50-degree weather—and two, my favorite denim styles. Jeans are essential here in Los Angeles, and I can’t wait to dive into the vintage denim game the city has to offer (more on this soon).

I also love how both of these elements have that Western flair. It’s not overdone, but it feels so right here. I adore my vintage YSL leopard-printed ponyhair jacket, and I’m plunging into the search for more light jackets and coats—letting them speak whilst keeping it simple, basic pieces underneath.

Different Textures & Fabrics

Since my cross-country move, I’ve noticed my closet is seriously lacking in lightweight textures. Silks, satins, linens, and crinkly cotton have recently been my go-tos, but a girl needs even more in this nonstop sunshine! Vintage Issey Miyake, high-collar tops and jackets, and Armani’s collections have been inspiring me recently.

Those kinds of unique evening tops go a mile here on the West Coast. You can pair them with jeans during the day and dress them up slightly for a date night (with a matching silk skirt, as pictured here).

Finally, Fun Shoes

I’ve had these sneakers in my closet for a couple of months now, but I hesitated to wear them in New York because of so many challenging elements (rain, snow, the works). In Los Angeles, the weather is so mild and sunny that I am getting to wear different footwear. Cue the snakeskin options! You can add that spice to a look, without feeling like you are overdoing it.
