These days, young adults are finding the transition into independent living more difficult than ever.
A sluggish job market coupled with rising housing and living costs is keeping many 20- and early-30-somethings in their parents’ home, redefining the definition of adulthood in the United States, according to data.
This also affects the life of the parents, as many find themselves caring for aging parents while also supporting grown children
To determine the places where the most young adults live with their parents, Nifty 50+ reviewed five-year data on living arrangements from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey.
States were ranked based on the percentage of adults 18 to 34 years old living with their parents. Supplemental data on median home value and unemployment were acquired from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The places where the most young adults live at home are a mix of states with high housing costs and high unemployment, according to the news source, aimed at people over age 50.
In New York City — where the average rent for a one-bedroom is about $4,000 a month — 34.9% of adults 18 to 34 years old live with their parents, among the most of any metro area, the study found.
And while rent is lower in Detroit, high unemployment could explain why 40% of young adults live with their parents there. Several major cities in California struggle with both, the study found.
