MANHATTAN, New York (WABC) — President Donald Trump took a victory lap on Tuesday, exactly one year since the start of his second term, while rallies in New York City and nationwide protested his policies.
The president’s one-year anniversary comes as critics blast him for his push to acquire Greenland, and his response to the deadly ICE shooting in Minneapolis.
Demonstrators in New York City made sure to make their voices heard, and say they too are here for the long haul.
They started to gather at Bryant Park on Tuesday evening, and earlier in the day, about 100 of them turned out at Trump Tower.
The organizers say they are demonstrating to highlight one year of pain and chaos under the Trump administration, saying it’s time to stand up. They say the administration has defied the courts, deportedAmericans, attacked civil rights, and antagonized allies.
About a dozen or so of these protests happened in the Tri-State area. Organizers say 600 are happening nationwide.
The president opened his news conference by touting mugshots of people who he says are violent criminals removed my ICE, and blamed President Joe Biden.
Protestors say while there is a long list of reasons why they are once again out on these streets, much of their focus, given current events, was on ICE and Greenland.
“Like a dictator, he’s just doing whatever he wants and it doesn’t seem like anybody is able to stop him,” said one protester.
“He’s pissed because he didn’t get the damn Nobel Peace Prize like a 5-year-old, he’s stomping his feet and saying, ‘OK then, I’m going to retaliate,'” another protester said.
Demonstrators say they fear that Minneapolis is just the beginning, and is the testing ground, and that once ICE is done there, they will move on to cities like New York.
