New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen provided encouraging injury updates on wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo on Tuesday, following John Harbaugh’s introductory press conference as head coach.
Nabers, who suffered a torn ACL (and meniscus) in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, is on schedule.
“Malik is trending to hopefully be ready for training camp,” Schoen said. “Things can change … but that’s the hope.”
Harbaugh, who spoke with Nabers by phone, praised the rookie’s work ethic.
“I had a chance to talk to Malik on the phone,” Harbaugh said after the press conference. “It was great. He was training out in LA, rehabbing out there for a week or whatever it was and working hard. I just love talking to him. His joy and excitement, he had some really good ideas, he’s really a thoughtful guy.

“Obviously, saw him coming out (of LSU). He wasn’t a guy we had a chance for, so it was like, ‘Well, look at this guy, he’s really good.’ Just kind of a dream. I figured we might have to cover him someday, and here we are, we get a chance to coach him. So I’m really excited about it.”
However, sports medicine physician Dr. Jesse Morse cautioned that Nabers likely won’t be ready for Week 1 due to the meniscus repair and prolonged recovery markers, potentially landing on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Skattebo, sidelined by a dislocated ankle in Week 8 at Philadelphia, is fully on track.
“He’ll be fine,” Schoen said. “He’ll actually be prepared for the offseason program on April 6. He should be good.”
Skattebo himself vowed, “That’s not even a question. I’m going to be back … That is not going to stop me,” promising a stronger return.
