NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City officials are prepping all five boroughs for what is anticipated to be the largest snowstorm of the season so far.
On Thursday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city is “working to do everything that we can to keep our schools open” and hasn’t decided on closing them down on Monday.
The Department of Sanitation will brine streets, highways and bike lanes starting Friday to prepare for the storm that could accumulate nearly 10 inches of snow in New York City.
Starting Saturday, 2,000 sanitation workers will start 12-hour shifts. Roughly 700 salt spreaders will go out on Saturday night. Once snow begins to accumulate, plows will be deployed to the streets.
A Code Blue is in effect for New York City leading up to and throughout the storm as wind chills are expected to hit dangerously cold levels on Friday.
Mayor Mamdani recommended getting groceries or a new winter coat as soon as possible before the weather arrives.
