BATH BEACH/BENSONHURST — ELECTED OFFICIALS IN SOUTHERN BROOKLYN are helping constituents in the protracted fight against an 86th St. developer. City Councilmember Susan Zhuang, D-43, State Assemblymember William Colton, D-47, and District 47 Leader Larry He are helping a group of constituents file an administrative appeal with New York City’s Board of Standards and Appeals against a 150-bed proposed shelter at 2501-2511 86th St.
According to the appeal, which the BSA accepted on December 30, the city is only permitted to skip certain mandated requirements if a contract is already in place for the facility. The group claims that no such contract was signed, and the city Department of Buildings allowed the developer at 2501 86th Street to skip many of the mandatory steps when issuing the permit months ago. Among these steps: utility shutoffs, sewer capping, rodent control, notifications to neighbors and Community Board 11, photos and safety documentation, pre-demolition inspection and the mandatory DEP stormwater permit. Colton reports that Community Board 11’s Planning and Zoning Committee unanimously (with one recusal) voted to support the appeal, with a full-board vote in February.
Opposition to the shelter has been persistent, with protests onsite and at City Hall, since the city in 2023 announced its plans to build it.
