STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Monsignor Farrell rode a stingy defensive effort to a 52-38 CHSAA A/Staten Island division victory over visiting Moore Catholic Friday in Oakwood.
The Lions, whose balanced attack was led by senior JJ Yates (14 points, two treys), won their fourth straight to improve to 10-7 overall, including 8-5 in league play.
Head coach Danny Fisher’s troops also improved to 3-2 in CHSAAASI play with big road games coming up against St. Edmund’s (Wednesday), St. Joseph by-the-Sea (Friday) and Monsignor McClancy (Feb. 1).
Nick DeGrado and Eenej Vinson scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Mavericks (3-11 overall, 2-9 CHSAA A, 0-4 CHSAASI).
“Our defense set the tone early and it was important since we struggled offensively in the first half,’’ explained Fisher, whose team led 5-3 after one quarter and 22-16 at halftime. ”We spoke at halftime about the importance of cutting hard and moving without the ball and those things helped us score in the second half.
“We were able to get out in transition and we did a great job finding the open man,’’ continued Fisher, who also received contributions from Matt Scalisi (10 points), Mike Abreu (10 points) and Ryan Hanley (seven points, nine rebounds, four blocks). ”We have many guys who can put the ball in the hoop and are tough to guard when we move with a purchase.’’
The Lions, in fact, scored 19 points in the third quarter behind Scalisi (seven points), Abreu (five), Yates (four) and Hanley (trey). The Oakwood school carried a 41-30 advantage into the final eight minutes.
Farrell had five different players register a field goal in the fourth quarter, including Yates’ trey. Fisher, meanwhile, was pleased to see seniors Yates, Scalisi, James Hutchinson and Ryan Tait finish out Senior Night with solid play in the final period.
“I’m proud of our seniors for stepping up in the fourth quarter during crunch time,’’ concluded Fisher. ”It was only fitting that all four of them were on the court during crucial moments of the final period. They have given so much to this program and I am extremely proud of them.’’

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Junior Aaron Vazquez scored the go-ahead basket with just 11 seconds remaining and the Eagles got one last defensive stop en route to the CHSAA AA victory over the host Lions on Friday.
Vazquez finished tied for the game high with 15 points as St. Peter’s won its fourth straight and for the sixth time in the last seven games.
The seven-time defending SIHSL Tournament champion Eagles improved to 8-8 overall, including 2-5 in AA play.
“The boys did a great job executing our defensive game plan,’’ said fourth-year head coach Ryan Woods, who also received offensive contributions from Nico Parlanti (nine points) and Ryan Freeman (eight points). ”We were able to get stops when we needed it most, including the last play of the game.
“We were balanced offensively and continue to share the ball and make the right play,’’ Woods continued. ”We’re stacking good days at the right time.’’
St. Peter’s, which led 40-32 entering the final period, watched Loughlin stage a late comeback behind Luke Jackson (15 points) and Kal-el Lawson (12 points). In fact, the Lions took a one-point lead in the waning seconds.
But with time winding down, senior Parlanti drew a help defender toward him on a ball screen before feeding a cutting Vazquez in the lane. The 6-foot-4 power forward scored the go-ahead bucket with just 11 ticks left for a 52-51 lead.
“Nico made a nice play on a side ball screen with Aaron,’’ said Woods. ”He drew the help and hit a rolling Aaron down the lane to put us up one.’’
Both Vazquez and Freeman finished with six points in the final period.
The Eagles, who were 12 for 16 from the free-throw line (Parlanti 3 for 3, Noah Scott 3 for 4), then got one last stop when they successfully defended against a baseline out-of-bounds play.
St. Peter’s led 24-22 at intermission, but Noah Scott scored five third-quarter points and Vazquez added a conventional three-point play to give the visitors a 40-32 advantage through three periods.
St. Peter’s visits Mount St. Michael in the Bronx on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Tigers saw their 16-game winning streak to start the season come to an abrupt halt on Friday, as the they absorbed the ACIS loss to the visiting Dwight School in Dongan Hills.
SIA, 16-1 (10-1 ACIS) is now tied atop the league standings with the Manhattan squad.
Danny Nowak led the Tigers with 21 points while Ayden Howe added 10 for the hosts. Gabe Moschella and Luke DeVito scored nine and eight, respectively.
A tightly played first quarter ended with DeVito scoring off a drive to bring the Tigers within 18-16. However, Dwight exploded in the second quarter to outscore SIA 21-6. The Lions were led by mercurial sophomore guard Milan Foye, who scored seven of his game-high 25 in the period.
“We just fell apart in the second quarter,” Tigers head coach Mike Mazella lamented. “Foye dominated us, and they did a great job getting paint touches and interior baskets against our man-to-man defense. And then when we switched to zone, Dwight moved the ball beautifully for open looks. They really played well, and we were on our heels the whole quarter.”
Dwight’s 17-point halftime lead carried into the final quarter, as the two teams played evenly in the third period. The Tigers, though, cut Dwight’s lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, but six missed free throws in the period and a handful of turnovers derailed the comeback attempt.
“We’ve had games in which we didn’t play our best this year,” Mazella noted, “but up until now, we were always able to find a way to win those games. But Dwight is too talented for us not to bring our A game, and we didn’t do that today. Give them credit, though, since they had a lot to do with that. Their defense was outstanding, they shot the ball well, and they made us uncomfortable on the offensive end. We had too many forced shots, not enough ball reversals, and not enough movement. We ended up playing too much hero ball, and we paid the price.”
SIA returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Manhattan to take on Avenues in another ACIS contest.
