STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged able New Yorkers to be ready to spend the day inside on Sunday, but said his administration is ready for the impending winter storm.

Hizzoner made the comments at a Manhattan press briefing ahead of this weekend’s storm, which is expected to bring freezing temperatures and a wintry mixture, including several inches of snow to the five boroughs.

“It will be colder than any sustained period that New York has experienced in about eight years, but New York, whatever comes for it, this city is ready,” Mamdani said. “Every agency is working in lockstep with the other. We are thoroughly equipped, and we are ready for whatever winter weather comes this Sunday.”

Forecasters predict snow to begin between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday continuing throughout the day before possibly becoming sleet Sunday night into early Monday morning.

A bit more snow should return Monday morning, with Mamdani saying the city expects to see about 8 to 9 inches of snow before the storm is over.

Plows will be ready to go around the five boroughs as soon as 2 inches of snow accumulates, and Mamdani said Saturday that trucks have already been out brining the streets in preparation for the storm.

The mayor has yet to finalize plans for city schools ahead of the snowstorm, even leaving open the possibility of public schools staying open Monday.

“We are prepared for every eventuality, and we ask that everyone do their part so the incredible city workers across the five boroughs can do theirs,” Mamdani said.
