STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City Emergency Management has issued a coastal flood advisory for southern Queens and Staten Island, warning of minor flooding expected during the early morning hours Monday.

Water levels could rise as much as six inches above ground level between midnight and 5 a.m., potentially flooding shore roads and properties in the affected areas.

Officials are advising residents to move vehicles to higher ground before the flooding begins. Anyone whose car comes into contact with floodwaters should wash it thoroughly afterward, as coastal flood waters can damage vehicles.

The National Weather Service warns people to avoid driving through or touching flood waters, which may contain pollutants or hidden hazards.

New York City residents who encounter flooding should call 311 if the flooding makes roads impassable, causes property damage or lasts more than 48 hours.

Residents can sign up for emergency alerts through Notify NYC at NYC.gov/NotifyNYC, via the app or by calling 311. Alerts are available in multiple languages. For downed trees, call 311, or call 911 for life-threatening emergencies involving trees blocking roads or near power lines.
