This latest storm did not disappoint — dropping nearly nine inches of snow and turning Hell’s Kitchen it to a giant snow globe for most of the day. Those who ventured out shared their snapshots of the wintery scene with W42ST.

We spotted more than a few creative shoveling techniques while wandering the neighborhood, including a duo tackling the sidewalk outside the Urban Assembly Gateway School on W50th Street with a shovel–leaf blower combo.

Over on 9th Avenue, Jasper’s general manager Graeme Hayden reflected on his first New York snowstorm back in 2016 — a week that also saw a devastating fire at neighboring Empanada Mama. Fresh off the plane from Ireland, Hayden told W42ST, “I didn’t think I was going to survive America.”

Kids were also out enjoying the snow — some helped shovel while others enjoyed being pulled along 9th Avenue in a sled.

Rebecca Carman got a shot of DSNY’s fleet of trucks in a formation known as “tandem plowing” along W44th Street. They even paused so she could snap a quick photo!

Tara Bracco also caught a plow in action — this one belonging to the Port Authority — clearing outside the Lincoln Tunnel entrance on 10th Avenue near W40th Street. Speaking of Port Authority, W37th Street resident Melinda Caudill let us know workers were outside shoveling the sidewalk on an overpass bridge that was left covered in ice after the last storm.

Paul Devlin captured this shot of a startled Ben Franklin peering down from a Verizon billboard at a snow-covered 8th Avenue.

W42ST reporter Brennan LaBrie trekked over to DeWitt Clinton Park, where he captured a rotund snowman with a flower in its head and the bright frogs of the splash pad still peeking out of the snow.

One of our youngest readers, Wolfgang Sloane, enjoyed his very first snow — looking around in wonder from a bus shelter on 10th Avenue, before popping into Fusion with his family.

With temperatures set to be below freezing for the coming week, this snow won’t be melting any time soon. Enjoy it before it turns into a slushy, gray mess!
