City rolls out new trash bins in CB2

NORTHWESTERN BROOKLYN — THE NEW TRASH BINS THAT THE CITY OF NEW YORK HAS DELIVERED TO COMMUNITY BOARD 2 neighborhoods are being placed in parking spaces, according to an Oct. 20 report in Gothamist. Last week, dozens of what Gothamist described as “space-age garbage containers” were placed in Brooklyn’s streets as part of the Sanitation Department’s efforts to get heaps of trash bags off the sidewalks. The bins, from Contenur, have been rolled out incrementally since 2024. Since mid-October, 76 additional containers have been installed outside 19 schools within Brooklyn Community Board 2. More schools and residential buildings with more than 30 units will get the large bins.

Gothamist reported that city officials plan to install additional bins in parking places, which got mixed results from locals. Another Gothamist story indicated the pilot rollout will probably take until 2032, especially with New Yorkers’ concerns over losing their already scarce parking spots.
