NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — As New Yorkers continue to navigate their way through mounds of melting snow in the city, some may experience lasting weather-related mail delays.

Some New York City residents have taken to social media to say they haven’t received mail and packages since Sunday’s storm dumped more than a foot of snow on the city.

Complaints came from residents in neighborhoods like East Flatbush, Kips Bay, Harlem, the Upper East Side and more.

“No mail today or yesterday at my office. Packages marked as weather exception,” wrote one user.

“January 29th. Still nothing! Waiting on about 25 pieces total for the week so far,” wrote another.

In response to residents’ concerns, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has posted a notice on its website alerting people that delays in service may continue because of “severe weather conditions across the U.S.”

“As most areas in and around New York City continue to recover from the recent storm, postal carriers will make every reasonable attempt to deliver mail where it is safe to do so,” a spokesperson for USPS told PIX11 News in a statement.

According to the spokesperson, mounds of snow and patches of ice in front of mailboxes have created hazardous conditions for postal carriers.

“Carriers are not allowed to attempt door delivery when there is a heavy buildup of snow and ice on sidewalks, steps or porches. They are not allowed to dismount vehicles for curbside boxes blocked by snow and ice buildup.” the statement said.

As a result of the safety hazard, the postal service is urging residents to clear walkways, sidewalks, and approaches to mailboxes. Alternatively, customers are also advised to pick up mail from their local Post Office with ID.
