STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As expected, top-seeded Tottenville advanced to the championship round of the PSAL 2A citywide playoffs Saturday at home by beating two opponents, including Susan Wagner, 55-25, in the semifinals.
Petrides, however, seeded first in the 1A bracket, was upset by No. 4 Eagle Academy, 43-35, in the semifinals.
The Pirates entered the 15-team playoff Saturday with an 8-0 league mark. After receiving a bye in the opening round, John Cichon’s club toppled No. 9 seed Forest Hills, 65-15, in the quarters.
That set up an all-Island semifinal with No. 5 Susan Wagner but the Pirates proved to be too much. The Falcons had advanced to the semis by beating No. 12 Bronx Science, 66-16, in the opening round, before disposing of No. 4 Metropolitan Campus, 46-27, in the quarters.
The Pirates will now face No. 2 seed Madison, which beat No. 7 FDR (55-22) in the quarters and No. 3 Cardozo (70-9) in the semis, Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Grover Cleveland HS in Queens.
Meanwhile, Petrides, which was 8-0 in the regular season, received a bye in the opening round of the 18-team 1A bracket before blitzing No. 17 Bathgate, 71-6, in the second round.
Head coach Dave Olah’s troops followed that with a 71-6 rout of No. 9 Information Tech in the quarters before succumbing to No. 4 seed Eagle Academy in the semis.
Eagle will now face No. 2 Riverdale/Kings HS Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Grover Cleveland for the city crown.
